For the THIRD consecutive time, the American University of Beirut Medical Center (AUBMC) has been awarded Magnet Recognition by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), a subsidiary of the American Nurses Association. The announcement call was made today, on August 15, 2019, by the Chair of the Commission on Magnet Recognition, Dr. Jeanette Ives Erickson, DNP, RN, NEA-BC, FAAN. Dr. Erickson announced that the result of the vote for AUBMC redesignation by the Commission on Magnet was unanimous, highlighting an outstanding exemplar related to the transformational leadership for creating a robust environment for quality and innovative care delivery. Dr. Erickson highlighted the great interprofessional collaboration with the medical staff as “Strategic Partners ensuring that our organization is the best place to care and for everyone to work in”. With those words, Dr. Erickson concluded, “Congratulations on your third designation colleagues”.

The American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) is the largest and most prestigious nurse credentialing organization in the United States. ANCC recognizes healthcare organizations for nursing excellence through the Magnet Recognition Program. Only about 8 percent of US health care organizations have achieved Magnet recognition and AUBMC is the FIRST in the region and the SECOND outside USA to earn this honor for THREE times. This is a true testament to AUBMC’s continuous distinction in the provision of quality patient care, nursing excellence and innovation in professional nursing practice.

AUBMC first achieved Magnet designation in 2009 and was awarded redesignation in 2014 which has become the highest standard of nursing excellence. To sustain Magnet status, hospitals have to reapply for Magnet designation every four years. The rigorous process includes a comprehensive application and submission of empirical evidence demonstrating compliance to Magnet standards and improvement in quality patient care, followed by an extensive review and a site visit by ANCC appraisers that took place from July 1 to July 3, 2019. Proudly, AUBMC continues to be the pioneer in the Middle East in repeatedly achieving Magnet recognition.
